Group Dog Training Equipment

So you and your new puppy just signed up for puppy kindergarten... what next? If it's your first dog or you're a veteran student, showing up to a new group class can be nerve-racking. Here is my list of equipment, supplies, and recommendations to help you get the most out of class and help training run without a hitch.

Supplies

Bring to Class:

  • Age appropriate vaccination records before class begins (or digital copy via email)

  • Secure collar or harness

  • 5ft flat leash

  • Poop bags

  • Treats: 100 high value treats in a variety of flavors. About the size of your dog’s toenail so they can chew quickly.

  • Toys: 2 toys! This lets you trade one in your hand for the one in their mouth.

  • Entertainment: stuffed puzzle toy or long lasting chew to keep your dog entertained during lecture moments.

Optional Supplies:

  • Treat pouch

  • Blanket, towel, or mat to rest on

  • Clicker

  • Notepad

  • Bowl and water

Tips

Here are a few tips to make your class time run more smoothly

  • Arrive 5-15 minutes early.

Arriving early helps your dog acclimate to the training area and lets them focus on you during class time instead of the ever-interesting environment.

  • Take fequent potty breaks.

Before, during, and after class expect to take potty breaks; at least twice as frequently as you would normally. Working hard gets the whole body moving!

  • Bring the best you've got!

Rewards are what drives your dog's behavior, so come prepared with their favorites! String cheese, real fur chews, a stinky ball, fast food, or any of your dog’s passions are better than something you "should" bring.

  • Adapt meals that come right before class.

It’s hard to be excited about treats on a full tummy. Feel free to lower portions for one meal before class. Remember that treats are calories, so factor training and food enrichment into your dog’s daily intake.

  • Trust yourself and your dog.

Our trainers have a lot of study and experience with all types of dogs and are prepared to help you learn your dog’s language. Meanwhile, you have the most experience with your dog! Take your time to enjoy learning with your dog; it’s okay to make adjustments so that class time works for your team.
